ProHelp® EPM - System is too slow despite having a lot of RAM....

The information in this FAQ applies to the following:

  • ProHelp® EPM, Releases 5.2.1, 5.2.0, 5.1.0, 5.0.0

If your system is slow, despite having a lot of RAM in the server, it is possible that SQL Server is not configured properly. SQL Server 6.5 will only use the amount of RAM that is specifically allocated to it. By default, SQL Server 6.5 will only use 16 Meg of RAM.

Mattec currently recommends that EPM servers should have 256 Meg of RAM, of which 128 Meg should be allocated to SQL Server. To change the amount of RAM that is allocated to SQL Server, follow these steps:

  • Start the Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager.

  • In the Server Manager window, open the SQL 6.5 folder.

  • Right click on your database and select Configure.

  • Click on the Configuration tab of the Server Configuration/Options dialog.

  • In the Configuration column, locate the Memory field. The Current column indicates the amount of memory that is allocated to SQL Server. SQL Server will not use more than this amount of memory.

  • The Current memory that is allocated to SQL Server may be modified in multiples of 2048. The new amount of memory should vary depending on the amount of memory in your server, and should not exceed 50% of the server’s total memory. Press OK to save your changes.

You must reboot the system for your changes to take effect.

For additional information, contact your Database Administrator.
