MIU Selection Guide

ProHelp® EPM is a Microsoft Windows-based real-time production and process monitoring system. Data is collected automatically, and in real-time, from MIUs (Machine Interface Units) that are connected directly to machines or assembly stations.

All MIUs require a digital contact to be wired from the machine to the MIU in order to provide "cycle time" (or machine speed or length of part extruded), run time, and downtime. Additionally, many MIUs provide the following:

  • Most MIUs allow additional digital and analog inputs to be wired in to monitor process information from the machine, such as temperatures and pressures.

  • Most MIUs allow the MIU to optionally be connected directly to the machine's PLC (Programmable Logical Controller) to extract process information directly from the PLC.

  • Many Mattec customers use digital inputs, analog inputs, and PLC inputs to obtain the production and process information that they are interested in.

  • Most MIUs provide a user interface for the machine operator that allows the operator to login, enter scrap, select downtime reasons, call for help, and perform SPC/SQC functions.

  • Many MIUs are capable of monitoring more than 1 machine at a time.

TSMIU

The TSMIU is a color, touchscreen MIU that has a large 10.4" display. It is Mattec's most powerful MIU and is capable of monitoring one machine using digital, analog, and PLC inputs. Read More...

    TSMIU-5X - Same as above, but without optional analog inputs. Available with an optional PLC interface.

    TSMIU-0 - Same as above, but capable of monitoring production and process information for 2 to 16 machines. The TSMIU-0 can not have PLC interfaces but can have digital and analog inputs that can be shared across all 16 machines. Read More...

PCMIU (Cell Controller)

The PCMIU, also known as the Cell Controller, is a software-only program that provides a user interface that is very similar to the interface for a TSMIU or TSMIU-0. The PCMIU software runs on Microsoft Windows, uses standard Ethernet or wireless connections, and can be used with a touch-screen PC or with a standard desktop PC.

The PCMIU does not provide any machine-based data collection. Rather, data is collected from the machine using any of Mattec's MIUs, including any MIU made since 1983. PCMIUs are commonly used with AIUs, but the PCMIU can be used in conjunction with a TSMIU or any MIU. Read More...

MIU-10X

The MIU-10X is made of the same hardware as a TSMIU but has a 16 X 40 character LCD display. Historically, this has been one of Mattec's most popular MIUs because of it's easy-to-use operator interface, cost effectiveness, and strength as a process monitoring platform.

  • Process Monitoring: 16 digital inputs, 12 + 2 analog inputs, 8 digital outputs optional

  • PLC Interfaces: Optional

  • Scrap Reasons: Up to 200

    MIU-10X - Same as above.

    MIU-5X - Same as above, but without optional analog inputs. Available with an optional PLC interface.

    MIU-0X - Same as above, but without optional analog inputs or PLC interface. Capable of monitoring 2 to 4 machines.

AIU-X

The AIU-X (Auxiliary Interface Unit) is made of the same hardware as a TSMIU, and can even be converted into a TSMIU or MIU-10X, but it does not have a display. AIUs are commonly used for data collection when a PCMIU will be used for the operator display. The AIU-X is capable of monitoring one machine using digital, analog, and PLC inputs.

The AIU-X must be configured intially using either an LCD Display or a TSMIU display that is plugged into the unit. Typically, a customer will purchase one display and use it to configure all AIUs.

MIU-Z1

The MIU-Z1 is Mattec's lowest cost MIU. It has a 2-line LCD display that allows the user to easily log in, enter scrap, select downtime reasons, and call for help. It can monitor production information for one machine. Read More...
